About Model United Nations

MUN Conference

What is Model United Nations?

Model United Nations (MUN) is an educational simulation and academic activity in which students can learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations. MUN involves and teaches participants research, public speaking, debating, and writing skills, in addition to critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership abilities.

Participants in Model UN conferences, known as delegates, are placed in committees and assigned countries to represent, or occasionally other organizations or political figures, where they represent members of that body. They are presented with their assignments in advance, along with a topic or topics that their committee will discuss. Delegates conduct research before conferences and formulate positions that they will then debate with their fellow delegates in the committee, staying true to the actual position of the member they represent.

History of Model UN

Model UN began as a series of student-led Model League of Nations simulations. The first Model League of Nations was held at Oxford University in the 1920s. The first collegiate Model UN conference was held at Harvard University in 1953, and the first high school conference was at Berkeley in 1952. Today, Model UN is practiced in middle schools, high schools, and universities across the globe.

How Model UN Works

In Model UN, students simulate UN committees and other multilateral bodies. Participants research and formulate political positions based on the actual policies of the countries they represent. During a conference, delegates:

  • Deliver speeches representing their country's position
  • Negotiate with allies and adversaries
  • Resolve conflicts
  • Navigate the UN's rules of procedure
  • Draft and vote on resolutions

Benefits of Participating in MUN

Model UN offers numerous benefits to participants, including:

  • Research Skills: Delegates must thoroughly research their country's position on complex international issues.
  • Public Speaking: Participants gain confidence speaking in front of groups and learn to articulate their ideas clearly.
  • Negotiation: Students learn the art of compromise and building consensus.
  • Critical Thinking: Delegates analyze problems from multiple perspectives and develop creative solutions.
  • Leadership: MUN provides opportunities to lead groups, guide discussions, and influence outcomes.
  • Global Awareness: Participants develop a deeper understanding of international issues and different cultures.
  • Networking: Students connect with peers who share their interests in global affairs.
